Just learned I’m to stay home for another week

My workplace has fully closed shutters till after Easter.

Meanwhile, I finally watched the Antony Hopkins King Lear, and somehow it had never occurred to me, reading the play, that if Cornwall hadn’t died he, Regan, and Edmund would have made the greatest Evil!OT3, but that was definitely the vibe I was getting from Tobias Menzies, Emily Watson, and John MacMillan. It was a cute note in a bleak story.

I’m still getting paid, for this next week at least, so I’m in a much better situation than a lot of people. I suppose the question is what happens when my vacation days for the year run out, as that’s how they’re classifying this time off.

Our CEO’s reasonably intelligent, so my guess is that he’s currently applying for whatever subsidies are being set up to cover payrolls while companies are shut down. Hope he is, anyway, and that he succeeds.

Oh, neat. Did it look like a directorial choice or a spontaneous chemistry thing? (I don't think I have seen it, but I have seen two productions of King Lear and in the first case about all I remember is Derek Jacobi's delivery of Lear's monologue in the storm.)

Probably a spontaneous thing. I haven’t watched those particular actors in much else, but MacMillan is good-looking and Menzies strikes me as the kind of performer one instantly ships with anybody he exchanges dialogue with. He *was* deliberately going for the Mr-and-Mrs-McBeth thing with Watson, I just think that Goneril is also canonically into Edmund and this version of Cornwall would probably find that hot. This version of Cornwall is also ok with gouging Gloucester’s eyes at the breakfast table, but nobody’s perfect (the First Servant ends up stabbing him with a butter knife, which has got to hurt; I did think it a touch out of character that Goneril seemingly abandons him once he’s wounded, but perhaps she can see it’s mortal).

I have really seen him only in The Terror (2018), but he is stupidly shippable there, and I am not even a person who always sees it.

I don't know how it was actually played, but the ordinariness of the butter knife makes it sound even more brave and impulsive, a person not normally possessed of weapons suddenly so outraged that they seize whatever's to hand. (I'll just watch this thing at some point. I like Anthony Hopkins.)
