As it turned out, I bought enough yarn for a sweater, hat and lace-up fingerless gloves. All finished and photographed now.

The landlady had an annual Christmas party where everyone got a pair of "wristlets" (apparently the exact archaic term for these things), which she had knitted over the previous year. Just after this year's party she was found stabbed to death with her knitting needles! Whodunnit?
