Went to our building's Christmas party and vodka-tasting. Chatted with a semi-fannish couple not from our building - unfortunately when green_trilobite mentioned his extensive book collection, one of them said "oh, I'll guess you be meeting your downstairs neighbours when your shelves crash through the floor, ha ha."
I can't blame her - she doesn't know about green_trilobite's OCD, or that his mind is never far away from thoughts of disaster; but now I have to assure him every hour that we live in a modern steel-and-concrete building, and the floor is *not* going to give way. He still keeps staring worriedly at the shelves, and I worry he'll have bad dreams tonight.
On a happier note, the vodka tasting was pretty interesting - someone on our social committee knows a couple who own a small vodka company (based in Oakville but they work with a factory in the Ukraine). They sell two kinds, one that's supposed to be more Russian/Polish in style, and one that's more westernized; I think I preferred the former. Of course it's hard to tell with these things how much your palate is being influenced by the description of what you should be tasting, but their brands did seem genuinely smoother than the competition - green_trilobite described the Russian/Polish-style as "evaporating on the tongue like a scotch."
ETA - I told the vodka people there's also a sake brewery in Toronto.

Date: 2011-12-17 05:48 am (UTC)From:THIS house was built by the friendly family company of our town's equivolent of Mr. Burns; you remember the mayor that wanted to take over half the new library (the one he opposed building) because hell, why would books need all that space? That's the one. They cut so many corners on this place it's a wonder it's still standing; and my room is over the garage. Dad's hit the stuck-at-halfway-open garage door with the roof of the car on more than one occasion and I've felt the reverb through my matress, not to mention that little earthquake we had a while back.
So if I haven't woken up in a cloud of dust yet, you guys could keep elephants in there and they'd still have no chance of going through the ceiling. XD
