Watching Johnny Test - recalling Ned's Newt, Fairly Odd Parents, etc., and further back, stuff like Barnaby, and wondering if Five Children & It was the progenitor of the whole "kids have a magical/mad scientist friend but their wishes always backfire and thereby hangs a tale" genre.

I have really vague memories about a show....or film....or something. I know it involved a boy and a girl, possibly related (can't remember) who go to stay (or move to?) an isolated old house...either with their father or to stay with some other male relative, I dunno about that either. All I know is that they found sort of a portal in the house to this magic island, where they met a dragon. I'm more or less sure it was a puppet, the dragon....and they had some kind of adventure, & when they tried to photograph themselves all together as proof, the dragon didn't show up on the film. I've never been able to find out what the hell this was and I've never met another living soul who remembers anything like it. : /
