Not that it's anywhere near as bad a situation as victims of sexual harassment face coming forward, but my spouse was commenting on a thread about Bryan Moore, an artist who has not played fair with him (took orders for artwork and never delivered). He added that he's disappointed in a group that still have the guy's products for sale in their catalogue even though, when he'd spoken to them a couple of years ago about the guy, they'd stated that they "did not endorse his business practices." At this point the comments he began getting in the thread struck me as familiar-sounding:

(Names redacted): Hey hey hey hey!!!! I have not ordered anything from Moore so I can't judge him. But Andrew, you shouldn't judge the wonderful HPLHS because of your personal opinions on Arkham Studios...

I can only speak from my own experience, but I have had NO problems getting my orders from Mr. Moore and have never previously heard anyone complain of his business or his character. The attached is very distressing to me.

It really is a shame since he seemed like a great guy and showed me the utmost respect while I was still serving in the USAF.

(My spouse): $500 owing is more than just a personal opinion generally I agree they are fine folks over at the HPLHS however I'm dubious because they continue to list and thus directly or indirectly endorse Mister Mooore's work and business practices !

(Name Redacted) I just took the time to read the entire attached article. While OPs trinket is beautiful, don't attack him or HPLS. Bring it to their attention and handle the matter like adults. If they so choose to continue supporting Mr. Moore's work then you must take it upon yourself to make a decision to either deal with it or move on. Legal action can be taken, no? Small claims court? Let's just be adults.

This quote seems fitting "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

Hear that everyone? -- don't talk about those missing stairs in public, or you might become a missing stair!

Anyone know how to hide a specific person's posts on Facebook? I don't care if he sees mine, but -- well there's this guy who's a friend of a friend; politically he's at the opposite extreme from me but I've been trying not to get riled by it.(cut for possible triggers - gun violence) Read more... )

Reposted (via cucumberseed), and with an additional link to futurismic’s comments on this issue from earlier this year ; (and the all-too-prescient SF story they published the year before.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.
