moon_custafer: Kate Beaton's Gatsby comics (jazz age)
Before heading out this morning, I woke from a dream in which I’d discovered a series of 1930s pulp adventures featuring a man and a woman—I think they were investigative reporters, but possibly something dodgier. At any rate the woman was blonde, petite and incongruously named “Clive Everett.” I kept thinking in the dream that the name seemed familiar, but googling its variant spellings hasn’t yet turned up anyone famous.

You seem to have a firmly Genre Savvy unconscious, since Tomboyish Names are a staple of adventure fiction (bonus points for rippling golden/copper/raven locks spilling out as “Sam” or “Alex” dramatically removes her hat.) Franky Cooke of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow comes to mind.

(The above trope is weirdly inverted for Hildy Johnson in His Girl Friday—a genderswapped version of the character of that name in The Front Page—the only male Hildy I can recall encountering anywhere. My semi-educated guess is that it would’ve been short for something bombastic like Hildebrand or Hildebert—which would have been even more risible during the U.S.’ involvement in the World Wars.)

The Cool New Book/Movie/TV Series that evaporates once you awaken is one of those archetypal frustrating experiences, isn’t it! (A recurrent version for me is the book of thoughtful in-depth reviews of awesome-sounding fictional works.)
