I knew, I suppose, that if the worst didn’t happen in the US election, that once the initial relief faded, I might run into trouble because life is some kind of tensegrity structure in which as soon as it becomes possible for you to fall apart, you will. And, well, I’ve enough other issues that I can/must keep it together, but the world at large does indeed feel like it’s become even more chaotic in the past three weeks.

For some reason my response to this has been to hyperfixate on Twin Peaks: The Return, which can’t be helpful, but at least keeps me amused. I don’t actually have a copy of the series, so I’ve been reading reviews and summaries and fanfics. I’ve watched what clips I could find online, as well as the behind-the-scenes footage, which is delightful and has caused me to develop a crush on pretty much everyone involved with the project: I’ve never seen a set so focused and meticulous, and at the same time so good-humoured-- they all just seem so happy to be practicing their backwards dialogue or folding and unfolding themselves or walking around an exact recreation of an old radio station, or allowing Lynch to very gently cradle the back of their head so he can pour out a pool of fake blood on the floor beneath them.

I even wrote a short fic myself for the plotline on which I was able to garner enough detail to do so.

I’ve also been working on my Yuletide assignment (not Twin Peaks, I suppose it’s not a spoiler to say that); it’s a tricky one, but I’m reasonably sure I’ll be able to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion before the deadline, even if I’m not yet sure what that will be.

I am knitting a sweater with the Paton’s worsted wool I somehow found at the Dufferin Mall Dollarama.

I am compiling a list of songs that use existing words and phrases nonsensically.

Eventually some kind of progression will feel possible again. I guess.

That sounds completely endearing.

Hugs!

Well, as Superman teaches us life is a never-ending battle. I've had to ramp up my stress handling routines with my Laundry Lord job added to the other two: especially since it involves dealing with the (literally) unwashed masses. I find that ritual really helps - in particular having a cuppa'.

I have the full tea service that I inherited from my Gran so I can do it proper with good Sheffield Steel teaspoons and tiny butter knives. It takes about exactly the amount of time to set up all of the instruments (cup, saucer, biscuit plate, toasted scone, scone plate, biscuits, sugar bowl, tiny cream tea pot, jam pot, teapot, tea bags, tiny butter knife, teaspoon) as it is for the kettle to boil and the tea to steep. I've been going through some of the seemingly infinite variety of tissanes (actual tea burns a hole in my stomach) available even without resorting to specialists such as David's Tea. So far the best is President's Choice - feeling cleansed which is a milkthistle and dandelion mix. It has a noticeably calming and focusing effect.

I've also found, like you, that increased fiction intake helps. In particular longer works as opposed to frittering away time on short flash video games and youTube. It seems to help with the ADD-ish problems to stay on one track for a while. I've been raiding our fabulous Public Libary system. It is especially fun to browse the SF bay at the North York Central branch. If you want to start on a new series they often have the whole thing there. I pulled in a wheelbarrow of stuff on the last day before they locked down. Even now, you can still reserve things on-line and pick them up in the lobbies. Unfortunately, with their policy of letting returned items sit in a bin for a week before the staff handles them, the Hold queues are moving at a snail's pace. I won't get the third book in the excellent series that The Expanse is based on until next year!
