Question – this announcement that they’re not going to be streaming students any more *sounds* good (in terms of not making them choose between university prep and trade school at fourteen?), but I don’t trust the Ford government.

What’s the word on the street? Is it going to turn out to be some kind of excuse to cut the less-popular subjects from the curriculum?

You should not trust the Ford government.

Here is the root of the issue: Applied classes have a class cap of 20, Academic classes have a class cap of 35 or more. If you get rid of Applied, you can fire more teachers. That is the basic economics at work here.

Now, streaming does need to go, as it unfairly affects Black and Indigenous kids and kids with disabilities, but a proper approach is to keep class sizes low and have supports because a lot of kids do have gaps in their learning that are obstacles to success in an Academic environment. Instead what's going to happen is these kids that were in Applied will be tossed into a huge class with zero supports but it'll save money.
