Andrew has begun watching Avenue Five, and it’s actually pretty decent as SF as well as situation comedy— they use stuff like the noticeable delay whenever they talk to engineers on earth as a running gag.

We already like the line “it’s Fate, and it’s freestyling with us! It’s, like, Jazz Fate!”

Also the captain (Hugh Laurie) has just dropped his American accent around the crew.

Cool end credits music.

I suppose I should consider giving Avenue 5 a look.

I've been kicking the idea of looking in at it. There's been a discussion of it over at give_satisfaction. It seems that responses vary widely.

I loved that. Especially since Laurie has played American characters, so it was not obvious—as it might have been with another actor—that the accent was a put-on for the character as well.

We have only seen the first two episodes, but I'm hoping to get back to the rest.

but also, the physics are much more realistic than on most SF shows, so they can’t just handwave solutions.

Yes. Nobody's going to pull a last-minute Martian. (A movie I liked very much until it burnt its realism goodwill with the finale.)

The finale of The Martian is interesting because in the book, there's a bit where the protagonist comes up with this idea but everyone else talks him out of it because it sounds cool but realistically has no chance of working... and then in the film, the protagonist comes up with the same idea and does it and it works, because in Hollywood "cool" is a more powerful word than "realistically".

That's even stupider than I already thought!

(I liked everything about the movie except the finale.)

I adored Avenue 5. At first I was wondering why Armando Iannucci would make Hugh Laurie do an American accent and then the payoff.

My favourite line is, "the bad news, or as we call it now, just news."
