Went to reread the famous twitter story from a couple of years ago in which Séamas O’Reilly tells how he once met the president of Ireland while high on ketamine. I ended up reading some of his other posts, like the thread that started with the report that he’d just discovered his dad had never heard of Rock, Paper, Scissors, by any name*, and turned into a tribute to his loving but hilariously out of touch with mainstream culture dad, an IT geek who’d found himself a widower raising eleven children in early-90s Derry. O’Reilly makes some comment about how a sitcom based on his childhood would be rejected out of hand as too ridiculous, but having recently heard of the show Derry Girls, I imagine the O’Reilly clan could show up as occasional supporting characters**
*The comments included a lot of people saying “well maybe he knows it as (different regional name for the game), even though Séamas had claimed this had started because his dad had seen people playing it on tv and had asked what they were doing, and that no amount of explanation or demonstration had triggered any sign of recognition.
