He was a different Orkin Man than the one we usually get. He was not as astoundingly tall. But he sprayed some insecticide on the nest outside my office and told me to call back if the wasps are still a problem at the end of the week.
I may be punchy because I just had a rainbow zigzag in one eye that usually signals The Oncoming Storm Migraine, but now I sort of want the Adventures of the Astoundingly Tall Orkin Man, and His Less Tall Companion.
Wasps and hornets are freaky. ISTG there was one hornet outside our kitchen window, which has a sort of tattered screen, and it was doing this patient methodical grid search -- down, over, up, down, over, up -- trying to find a way in!
Hornets are indeed freaky. In Asia they have the "Giant Hornet" which is about the size of a matchbox and bumps off a couple of hundred people a year. They're especially hard on cute little honey bees and can wipe out a whole hive in a couple of hours (see National Geographic YouTube channel's "World's Largest Wasps" episode). Japanese Honey Bees however, being Japanese and therefore high tech, have worked out a successful counter-attack. When they see the initial Hornet scout, they all yell "BANZAI!" and swarm it. As the Hornet is too armoured to be vulnerable to their material weapons they therefore use deadly vibrations to cook the scout inside said armour. See same YouTube channel "Hornets From Hell" episode.
