Good News/Bad News

My PT and my GP have finally agreed I can have a cortisol shot for my shoulder pain/I still have to wait till next Monday sports doctors at the physio place only work until 3:30pm and the next open slot isn’t till Monday morning anyway.

Guess I’m  going to have to book next Monday as a vacation day if they’ll let me do it with only a week’s notice (I had to claim I was sick today so I could go see my GP and also bring in Andrew to get his prescriptions updated.)

So far so good! I hope you can get some physio for it or at least a bunch of exercises to keep it from seizing up. I slacked off on my finger twitching for the last 10% of funtionality and hot/cold water soaking of my sprained finger and have regretted it.

(topic whiplash) I saw something online the other week that struck me as the kind of thing that would interest you – somebody mentioned that their hyperfixations included GI Joe comics, and said something in passing about COBRA getting much of its funding from a household-products MLM that might actually be Amway.

Someone else then asked about this, and the poster explained further – in the GI Joe universe, the plots frequently involve places, corporations or products with fairly obvious real-world originals, and generally they’ve been given “obvious-knock-off” names (well, the corporations, if they’re fronts for COBRA, usually have names like “ABROC, Ltd” – as the poster noted “the Joes could save themselves a lot of time and effort if they just memorized all the pronounceable anagrams of ‘cobra.’”).

The multi-level marketing scheme, otoh, is never actually given such a name, thus raising the possibility that it *really is* Amway and not just “basically Amway.”

Being an engineer I love infrastructure elements in fictional universes. There's a fair amount of stuff on where all of the henchmen come from but little on the financial end of things. Of course, maybe a lot of them just move around energy and matter without resorting to a dollar based accounting system. In Marvel Comics, A.I.M. decided that the whole "Rule the World" gig was a loosing proposition and decided to go with a corporate model. Then the New Mutant Sunspot, who is some kind of convenience store billionaire from South America, just bought them and used them for Avengers tech staff.

The G.I. Joe media is an example of where some toy or game company decides they want some comic book or video stuff and they farm it out to artists without caring much about what it is beyond showcasing the characters and avoiding becoming the target of some protest movement. With this almost total artistic freedom most staffs just do a minimal 9 to 5 job and turn out dreck. But there's the odd one where they do all sorts of outrageous stuff (social commentary, Tuckerisms, burlesques on the underlying material) that they'd never be allowed to do if there was actual editorial control.
