A humanoid alien race claimed to have no concept of gender – in practice, it turned out they drew a line between “beings with large stamens” and “beings with small stamens,” but as most of their population had medium-size stamens, the whole thing was mostly a judgement call really.

That's great.

Gender? Bah!

Sort of the plant version of 'Who has the most balls?", eh?

I don't think that "Gender" has much of a future anyway. The idea that the predominant set of pigeon holes for the mentally lazy to file people under could be based on who they bonked and what they bonked them with is of very recent origin. The term "Gender" first came up in the late 19 century in obscure alienist literature. It didn't come into the mainstream until the 1950s along with the rise of suburbia. Basically no one had heard of the term "Hetrosexual" until then. I doubt if it has much of a future.

Previously it wouldn't have occurred to people to use that as a filing indice. There was always a general idea that you should do some of the kind that would product babies, who looked just like you, so that when they grew up they could help in bashing other people, who didn't look like you, but that was more along the lines of a "close your eyes, open your legs and think of England" sort of duty.

If you were, for example, a Roman or Chinese Emperor you'd get filed under Ancestry, Religion, physical prowess and so on. What you did with your bonking time was basically your business and, as long as some heirs were produced, no one cared.
