We're ok so far. Outside our immediate neighbourhood the power mostly seems to be on. Last night we decided to spend the evening down in the lobby where the emergency power was on and we could chat with other residents; it turns out people are recharging their phones, etc, down there too. Unfortunately, the generator broke down/ran out of gas about 8 pm and we were stranded there until after midnight when the repairman arrived. The worst of it was having to overhear another resident complain for a couple of hours about how the whole staff ought to be fired for not being able to fix the generators themselves, and that she ought to withhold her condo fees/move out of the city -- apparently she thinks that stuff in the country never breaks down, and that if it does repair crews will arrive within the hour! Ha. Other residents were a bit more circumspect.

The fridge stayed cool enough that the milk was still ok yesterday, and I moved it up to the freezer overnight, but Andrew said it was just on the edge of turning this morning, so I suspect we'll have to toss it. Thanks for the grocery money -- bank transfers should still be working. There weren't a lot of perishables in the freezer anyway (we ate the thawed shrimp on the first night). Andrew has some errands to run downtown today so I'm planning to meet him after work and we'll have something to eat there. Hoping power will be fully returned in another day.

Hang in there! Of course we lose the juice for days at a time here but it's very much different in your own home in a more private situation. A city-wide outage in an emergency sounds really panicking.

It’s not actually city-wide, just some neighbourhoods; and the other flood effects seem to have been cleaned up.

Toronto has a lot of ravines and gullies that can fill pretty suddenly, but following a disastrous hurricane in the 1950s, the city converted most of the lower-lying and riverbank areas to public parks/watersheds, since picnic tables are easier to replace than homes if they get swept away. The nuisance this week is that one of the power plants that supplies the city was hit, so we’re still getting back up to speed.

I'd wondered if you guys got hit--Steve said he thought he saw your building in a news report. Here's hoping the power comes back ASAP.

Andrew just sent me an email that says " I came home all the electricity but the ac is on"

Which I *think* means "everything's back but the a/c."

My brother's emailed update was "Wow, it rained a lot last night!"
Because we are the sort of people who have our fingers on the pulse of the world.
Glad to hear things are improving. :)
