So, Narly (our younger cat) had to have five teeth out this week; I'm going to have to make sure we're frugal for at least the rest of the year to pay that off. I think we might be off to a good start, given that Andrew hadn't been feeling too well the last couple of weeks (I think part of it was worry over Narly), so we haven't been going out.

Narly, meanwhile, seems to be recovering just fine, and doesn't hold a grudge against us; I hope he keeps his patience in the face of the antibiotic pills I have to give him for the next while. The painkiller is in liquid form, so i just squirt a dose down his throat.

Carter, OTOH, keeps hissing at him, because he looks like Narly but doesn't smell right and he thinks he's some kind of alien imposter. To be fair, even I can tell Narly smells like the vet -- when i cuddle him I get a faint whiff of disinfectant.

My friend Baby Cat is having to swallow Bitter Pills as well. He had a liver infection, the cat version of jaundice, and is hyper-thyroidal as well. The liver problem was making his fur mat and go yellow but now, despite his vocal protestations against the treatment, he looks like one of the cats in the toilet paper ads. The thyroid medicine gets rubbed into his ears but has yet to result in any weight gain: although the weight loss has stopped. I like the idea of the Nuclear solution to the thyroid problem but Dee says that he's already a "Million Dollar Baby" as it is.

The Nuclear solution is a one time zap of the thyroid to get rid of a precise number of the over-producing cells there. As we know from Hiroshima and so on, if you pick up radioactive Alpha particles they can get lodged in your thyroid and fry it. So you take in a bunch of iodine which bind with the radioactive particles and which the thyroid also flushes out. So here, a precisely measure dose of radioactive iodine is injected; it reduces thyroid productivity; and comes out in the next two trips to the kitty litter box. The last part requires a couple of days stay over at the clinic because it is Radioactive Kitty Litter which has to be taken out of a lead-lined kitty litter box with tongs by guys in Rad Suits. Of course, one often feels that this should be the procedure in any case but here it is actually true!
