Some Not Good News

The California legislature has passed a same-sex marriage bill similar to ours, albeit by a slim margin. As I understand it, it now has to get by Schwartznegger - come on Arnie, do the right thing!

Damn! So he's vetoed it, because it should be decided by the courts instead of the legislature....thus reversing the standard Republican argument about "activist judges.."

I doubt he will get reelected, although the power of his celebrity-ism never ceases to amaze me. His election was such a joke. Granted he has been respectable when it comes to the environment, I can’t take that away from him. But I have sat here and watched our public schools go even farther down the toilet and education is just one of the interesting areas of funding he figures isn’t important enough to fully fund. One has to admire his boldness though, I am glad he was checked on his taking away of the states part in police/firefighter/teacher pensions. I can’t imagine, or at least I would like not to, that gay marriages will be illegal much longer here, but one never knows.

What puzzles me is that California is, I think, the state where the courts recently decided that if same-sex couples with kids split up, the non-custodial parent must pay child support ie, is still a legal parent with all the responsibilities and presumably all the rights, so I don't know if the courts are likely to deny marriage to such couples. Perhaps he's just hoping to delay things.

He would get such a backlash from conservatives if he passed it, not only in California but in D.C. as well. On the other hand if he really wanted to become a historic political figure for reasons other than novelty it would have been a good way of going about it. From where I sit I think in ten years to be able to say you were the first governor to pass same sex marriage bill in your state would be a nice card to have.
