‘Ma’am, have you any rope in your house? I can’t stand over him with this gun all night.” They bound Jake to a chair, and gagged him. Nine’s mother made coffee and she and Bill drank it in silence; occasionally she’d glance at Nine, curled up in her bed in the corner. The bones of Bill’s sweetheart, gathered up again in a bundle, lay on the table between them along with the pistol. Bill held his cup a trifle shakily. He’d reverted to a man of few words.
