Turning her attention from the square of light that was the near window, Nine’s mother strove to focus her eyes on the silhouette that came around the corner. It was not Jake’s, she was sure of that at, but belonged to someone a trifle shorter and slighter. She tightened her grip on her daughter as she felt the girl twitch with excitement; and wished for a moment that Nine could just be frightened like an ordinary child.
The moonlight touched the walker’s face, and they recognized, Bill, brother of Jake. He stopped suddenly, a shorts ways from them, and Nine’s mother froze, but he did not appear to have seen them; nor did he approach the house further. Instead the merchant, after looking about at several bushes, selected the one that gave the best cover and crouched behind it, waiting, just as they were. Another half-hour passed. The two watchers at the edge of the wood grew cold and damp, and it seems safe to presume the watcher behind the bush did so too, but no one spoke or moved.
