This morning the bus paused at an intersection long enough for me to observe two steam shovels at work. It's always surprising how organic their movements are. After a while it seemed to me that one was slightly more graceful than the other, which I attributed to the operator, since the machines looked to be identical models. It made me wonder if construction workers can recognize each other's driving style.

Relevant to this morning at work, because someone has been unsuccessfully attempting to park a giant truck in our garage for the past hour.

It's amazing what they can do with those big rigs. A really good operator can play the food pedals and the bank of levers just like a church organist. I saw a TV show once where there was some slum being torn down and they organised competitions between the steam shovel and wrecking ball operators. The wrecking ball guys were truly amazing. They could play the ball like a yo-yo: swinging it in figure-eights and "S"s; setting up an oscillation with an end point less than an inch from a target; and destroying a wall without disturbing the contents of the room beyond.

Grandpa drove a snowplow.
....according to mum, his operating style was "like a maniac."
