Canada's new Governor-General (ceremonial stand-in for the Queen, for those outside the Commonwealth)has been announced. Sadly, there have already been a few comments of "what?! another non-white, another woman? when do we go back to appointing old white guys, etc." Sigh. The comments of "another CBC journalist?" have a little more point to them, although when I thought about it -- people already in a career that requires good speaking ability and familiarity with politics and current events probably do have a leg up on the Governor-General post.
Of course my flippant theory is that they're sticking with women since they're less likely than men to get pressured into dressing up in the 19th-c military "I am the very model of a modern Major-General" outfit that past GGs have had to wear, and which is really hard to look good in unless you actually are from the military.
