Instead of trying to alter oversize t-shirts with nice prints on them, my new strategy is to cut the images from the shirt and sew them as patches onto t-shirts that actually fit to begin with; and then alter the necklines; and then go crazy with stencils and a bleach pen.

Seems to be working. :D
I've only ever tried resizing shirts that were too small before. Method involves slitting the sides, inserting a triangle of wildly patterned broadcloth, and making really huge, obvious stitches with embroidery thread over the seams. I've done a Joker and a live action Alice in Wonderland that way...
