ETA - I should point out myself that this isn’t the best analogy – The Gordon riots were at least nominally because Protestants were angry about the loosening of anti-Catholic laws; although individual motivations seem to have been varied and complex (William Blake joined in at one point) and I think at least one MP or lord was actually fomenting much of the violence for his own purposes.
