Mostly I just look at shoes and try to figure out how i could gussy up less-expensive shores to look like them.

The only shoes I ever modified were $3 thrift store heeled mary-janes...I covered them over with strips from a pair of glittery tights and a bit of white satin with silver sequins to make up the shoes of my Dr. Frank-N-Furter costume. Lol.
