My plotting hit a snag last night – I have a whole story arc roughed out that requires Viv & Ginny to leave the base, perhaps permanently – Ginny`s pregnancy was to have been the reason, but my preliminary research suggests the undersea base is probably no more dangerous to a pregnancy than a commercial airplane – less so, because the pressure`s not going to be changing frequently. This leaves only Dr. Marj making excuses that she`s not an OB-GYN, but that won`t wash either – if she`s qualified to be the base doctor, she`s got to be able to handle all ordinary medical situations, and having a baby is not exactly a rare disease known only to specialists. I could give Ginny a family history of health risks, but the plot I have planned out requires survival of some harsh situations, so that won`t work either. Hm.

What if they have to leave the base to deal with somebody else's problems? Family problems, maybe health-related, maybe legal...

That's a good idea, and less likely to lose sympathy for Ginny.

It had occurred to me she just needs to think there's a risk, especially since she's not on great terms with Marj just now --
I could make it that her sister's struggles to conceive have left her paranoid about her own ability to bear children – enough that she goes all OMG THIS IS MY ONLY CHANCE and leaves for a post on land. The trouble is how to do this without making her seem like a total bitch, but I can probably emphasize her fear and empathy with her sister's problems as the cause.
