The original Roger Corman Little Shop of Horrors is viewable in its entirety on youtube, so I have finally seen the legendary early-Jack-Nicholson-as-a-masochist-at-the-dentist's scene (see my icon). Definitely a better use of him than The Raven.

Bill Murray was pretty good in the remake too but not as good as Jack. Steve Martin though, was the best Sadistic Dentist ever in his show-stopping musical number in the same remake:

As a Doctor or Lawyer you'd be a mess
So be a Dentist, you'll be a success!

I have to say, though, I love The Raven to death - I think it's my favourite of the Corman Poes by a long shot, beating out even Vincent Price talking through a fan in "M. Valdemar" and Peter Lorre in "The Black Cat": "Nooooo! Don't let the cat get my heeeeead!"

Oh I love Raven too - I mean it's got the magicians' duel scene - it's just that Nicholson doesn't get to be particularly wacky in it.

Funny - I never used to get why people liked Nicholson, and what did it for me was the behind-the-scenes footage from making The Shining, in which he's flirting with absolutely everybody, telling stories about Boris Karloff, and saying things like "why did you have to know about my rice and noodles?"
