Avast! I be finally openin' the chest o' booty I took at the CNE a fortnight since...sorry, I can't do this.

Anyway, I just watched Boy, What a Girl!which is like a movie from an alternate universe - a "race film" (film made for all-Black audiences in northern urban areas and segregated southern movie-houses) from 1947, it apparently had hopes of becoming a crossover hit - it was made on a slightly larger budget than most movies of its ilk, and Gene Krupa briefly shows up and sits in on a musical number; afterwards he reminds the other drummer to repay the favour 'in one of my pictures,' in one of the movie's several breakings of the fourth wall.
The plot is typical trying-to-get backing-for-a-show shenanigans - more specifically, it's Charlie's Aunt, only in Harlem. It's the only time I've seen a jazz double-bass played with a bow, and the only time I can recall seeing a Black actor play a foppish Frenchman. It also has, as someone pointed out, probably the dirtiest jitterbugging ever put on film, at least in the actual 1940s.
Just letting you know for future Tangent Movie nights. You may now go back to shouting "arr!"

Arrrhhh!

Hmmm, the day's initials contain those of the Los Angeles Police Department: co-incidence? I think not!

Oh well, fun as it was, it's time to go back to talking like a Victorian - or at least an Edwardian. Last one back is a Freemason!
