Good Things and Bad
Aug. 6th, 2013 10:08 pmAndrew and I went to the Neil Gaiman reading/Q&A/signing for The Ocean at the End of the Lane (and also, as it turned out, for Fortunately, the Milk - "the most exciting story about milk since Tolstoy's War & Milk"). More details after a night's sleep. Luckily Gaiman has 20+ years' experience with book signings and wants to make them go smoothly for everyone concerned, so he announced there would be a "pre-boarding" signing for anyone with mobility issues or small children, before he moved on to the rest of the audience. Andrew falls into the first category by virtue of having a cane, so we were able to get out of there by half-past-eight and go have some dinner.
A couple of weeks ago, there was a post going around my Facebook feed about a missing woman in Ottawa -- friend of friends of friends, part of the SCA community. I couldn't do much for the search from Toronto, and I admit I didn't feel too hopeful once they found her car empty. The body turned up near a car a couple of days later. Tonight while we were eating dinner after the Gaiman reading, I saw a headline flash by on the tv screen that her husband had been arrested. An online search gave little more detail -- the police aren't revealing yet (to the public or to his lawyers) what they've got against him. I don't know any of these people, but I know a few people who do, and I imagine they're all pretty distraught, as it sounded as though both he and his wife had been well-liked.
