Blackout, Day 2
Jul. 10th, 2013 09:30 amWe're ok so far. Outside our immediate neighbourhood the power mostly seems to be on. Last night we decided to spend the evening down in the lobby where the emergency power was on and we could chat with other residents; it turns out people are recharging their phones, etc, down there too. Unfortunately, the generator broke down/ran out of gas about 8 pm and we were stranded there until after midnight when the repairman arrived. The worst of it was having to overhear another resident complain for a couple of hours about how the whole staff ought to be fired for not being able to fix the generators themselves, and that she ought to withhold her condo fees/move out of the city -- apparently she thinks that stuff in the country never breaks down, and that if it does repair crews will arrive within the hour! Ha. Other residents were a bit more circumspect.
The fridge stayed cool enough that the milk was still ok yesterday, and I moved it up to the freezer overnight, but Andrew said it was just on the edge of turning this morning, so I suspect we'll have to toss it. Thanks for the grocery money -- bank transfers should still be working. There weren't a lot of perishables in the freezer anyway (we ate the thawed shrimp on the first night). Andrew has some errands to run downtown today so I'm planning to meet him after work and we'll have something to eat there. Hoping power will be fully returned in another day.
