Three-Stage Sweater
gage: 4 st = 1" on larger needles; 8 st = 1" on smaller needles
1st Sleeve: CO 60 st (or circumference of your upper arm in inches x 8) onto 2 of the smaller dpns, 30 st on each.
K2 P2 in the round for 1".
Switch to larger dpns and K2 P2 for 1 round.
(K2, M1) to end of round. (90 st, 45 st on each needle)
P all stitches.
K all stitches. Repeat these 2 rounds (since you are knitting in the round, the result will be garter stitch) until sleeve measures 3" from start, or desired length, ending with a purl round.
Back: K45, place remaining 45 st onto a stitch holder. Turn work.
Sl 1, K44. Continue each row in this manner until garter-stitch panel is wide enough to stretch across your back.
End on a purl row.
Using waste yarn, Co 45 st on *other* end from where the work ends. Go back to the main yarn, join to knit in the round and P 1 round. Continue in garter st for 3” ending on a k round.
Decrease row: P1 P2 tog, repeat to end of round.
Eylet row (to match other sleeve’s increase holes) K2 tog, yo, repeat to end of round.
Purl 1 round.
K2 p2 to end of round (p2 tog if there is an extra stitch at end of round). Switch to smaller needles and continue in 2x ribbing for 1 inch – bind off loosely in pattern.
Starting on the right sleeve, K2, P2 all stitches from stitch-holder (45), pick up stitches along back of neck(milage may vary) and from stitches held by the cast-on in waste yarn (45). Knit back and forth across all these st in 2x rib for 7” (or your bust size divided by 4, minus 1”).
Buttonholes: (K2, wrap yarn around, P2 together) 8 times. K2P2 to end of row.
K2P2 one more row, then bind off in pattern.
Waist/Cowl: Pick up stitches around bottom of sweater and 2X rib in the round for 3 inches (or to taste). Sweater can be worn either way up.
As-Yet-Unnamed Sweater:
CO 70 st
K garter st for 20 ridges
k10 onto stitch holder. Cast on 5 purlwise. knit 55 across. Transfer remaining 10 st to stitch holder without knitting them. Turn work and co 5 st purlwise, then k across (60 st) Continue in garter stitch for 12 ridges and bind off.
Placing work on flat surface so that the stitches that were *knitted onto* the stitch holder are on the right side. Fold them over thus (picture). Pick up and k the 5 st that form the bottom of the sleeve, then knit the 10 st from the stitchholder. K back and forth on these 15 st for 12 ridges of garter stitch, then bind off and seam to the top of the sleeve.
Again placing work on flat surface so front is facing you, fold over held stitches and transfer them, still without knitting, onto needle. Pick up and k 5 stitches from bottom of sleeve, turn and knit those 5 st, then the 10 that were transferred from the stitch holder. Work back and forth in garter stitch for 12 ridges and then as before, bind off and seam to the top of the sleeve.
You should now have the body of a sweater with *really* short stubby sleeves and an open front.
Front: pick up and knit (multiple of 3, plus 1) stitches up one front side, along the back of the neck and down the other front side. Turn and P all stitches.
(K1, P2) to last stitch, K1.
(P1, K2) to last stitch, P1.
K all stitches.
P all stitches.
Repeat these 4 rows 6 more times.
(K1, P2) to last stitch, K1.
Bind off in pattern ((P1, K2) to last stitch, P1.)
Sleeves: pick up and knit (multiple of 3) stitches around sleeve stubs.
(K1, P2) for 2 rounds.
K all st for 2 rounds.
Repeat these 4 rows for (x) inches.
(K1, P2) for 1 round
Bind off in pattern (K1, P2).
Repeat for other sleeve. Sweater can be worn either way up. Fasten with a scarf pin.
