Our building's fire alarm went off at 6:30 this morning. It turned out to be a burst pipe in the sprinkler system. Good test of our go-bags, which we'd set up a couple of weeks ago. Conclusions:
Cats in carriers: Didn't take as long to put them in as you'd think. Heavy to carry, but there's no other option really. I saw a guy downstairs holding his cat in his arms, but our boys aren't that calm.
Documents in suitcase: No good, too heavy - I couldn't manage it and Carter's carrier at the same time. Most of them have other copies on file elsewhere anyway; need to scan them into the laptop and take that instead. Also, the two irreplaceable items from the library wouldn't fit and had to go in a nylon tote - that's a better thing to keep loaded to go.
Prescription meds in bag: worked well; having Atavan on hand to give green_trilobite was a bonus. Should have brought a bottle of water from the fridge to take them with.
Also, need to take an extra few seconds to get some pants on :P
ADD: We'd made it down to approximately the fifth floor by stairs when the announcement came it was a false alarm; but when we reached the lobby there were only about a dozen people waiting around, which suggests most residents hadn't bothered to leave their units at all.
Regarding the six-alarm on Queen West, we were at the Mirvish Village Suspect Video last night, and they said they were going to try to salvage the sign from their burnt-out store; also that Duke's Bicycles had a fire wall, so everything west of it is intact, though there's probably smoke damage.
