Took off on my own last night to see Beth In Battle Mode (link brings up music) play from their new cd, Technical Know-how. This was my first sight of the band my brother currently plays with. Their material strikes me as slightly less cerebral than that of The Gardens Faithful (although that might have been because it mas my first hearing and I couldn't make out the lyrics), but they have a lot of energy (a podcast on blog TO a while back said they "might just have written the catchiest song ever"). The drummer came in dressed in a home-made tinfoil robot costume, which he later removed to reveal a shirt and tie. My brother's keyboard-playing was the most enthusiastic I've seen - a bit too much so, perhaps, as the base end of the Contempo's keyboard gave out after one especially rousing number. It tennds to do this - unfortunately there was no Dick-Dale-of-the-synth around at the time of its production to beta-test for resiliency. Andrew improvised around it pretty fluently for the remainder of the set - by the time they were winding down their last encore, he was turning back to talk to another band member, casually holding a glass of beer in his left hand, while his right hand continued to play chords as if by its own volition..
