Temp agency got me three days last week—waiting out this week while they try out another candidate, then at some point they’ll pick one of us. A big thing I’ve noticed with job-hunting this time around is that there are so many people looking for work that employers can make you go through multiple rounds of interviews and tryouts even for the part-time or contract positions.

YouTube has turned up a lot of BBC and BFI docs showing people working at various trades. I’m delighted to have learned of the existence of Fred Dibnah (google him if you wish to watch a chainsmoking man with a Lancashire accent repairing steeples and demolishing smokestacks, all the while while cheerfully remarking that if anything goes wrong it’ll be half a day’s work for the undertaker)

Fred Dibnah is great! He's done some fascinating programmes over the year.

The old man with the car is more dedicated that I am. My garage has more clearance than that, but also foam on the walls. I drove my Ford Fiesta in once and decided that was enough and it could live on the road.
