I’m pretty sure “es tut mir lied” has too many words to literally mean “I’m sorry,” and is probably something like “it’s all my fault/my bad.”
"Es tut mir leid" literally means something much more like "It pains me" (it does grief to me). More idiomatically in English, "I feel bad about that."
