I remember the first time I saw Blue Velvet, it was back in the dark ages when you rented out a "media room" on campus which had couches and comfy chairs and a VCR (yes) and a big screen, and someone went into town who had a Blockbuster account. And my friends decided to do a double Lynch feature of Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, and Eraserhead was trippy as fuck, but my best friend at the time and I GRABBED for each other's hands not that long into BV and DID NOT LET GO. We were terrified and it was beautiful and awful and we loved it. Everyone else was like "It's just a movie!" but it really socked both of us right in the gut.
(Fire Walk With Me is still my fave of his, tho. It's been kind of amusing to see the TOTAL pendulum swing on that movie, from "laughworthy self-indulgent flop" to "amazing piece of art." It's gorgeous.)
