All this stuff is enjoyably Jamesian— he’s just as good at creating an atmosphere of vague unease here as in his other stories, even if there are allies to counter it.
It sounds great until it runs out. And I have definitely read other children's fiction with adult protagonists—Carol Kendall's The Gammage Cup (1959) comes first to mind. I'm sorry James never went back for the rest of the story.
