Now I’d *really* like to find a copy of the original novel by Vera Caspary – apparently it has multiple narrators, including Laura herself, and Caspary seems to have hated the adaptation for flattening the heroine’s characterization and stripping away her agency. Also she was consciously riffing on the works of Wilkie Collins and her version of Waldo Leyendecker is more of a Count Fosco type (20th-Century Fox originally planned to cast Laird Cregar in the role but Preminger thought he’d be too obvious.)
