Probably a spontaneous thing. I haven’t watched those particular actors in much else, but MacMillan is good-looking and Menzies strikes me as the kind of performer one instantly ships with anybody he exchanges dialogue with. He *was* deliberately going for the Mr-and-Mrs-McBeth thing with Watson, I just think that Goneril is also canonically into Edmund and this version of Cornwall would probably find that hot. This version of Cornwall is also ok with gouging Gloucester’s eyes at the breakfast table, but nobody’s perfect (the First Servant ends up stabbing him with a butter knife, which has got to hurt; I did think it a touch out of character that Goneril seemingly abandons him once he’s wounded, but perhaps she can see it’s mortal).
