The man standing casually by the door on the opposite side of the subway car is very clearly a character in some story. He is wearing a panama hat, glasses, some kind of L.L.Bean roughing-it coat, a dress shirt, high-waisted pants and brown oxfords. He has a newspaper tucked under on arm and a little rollaway suitcase. He is rapidly and methodically eating a packet of roasted peanuts, and quietly surveying everyone around him. He has a least two pens in his shirt pocket, and possibly a pocket-protector, but a crowd of people got on and I have lost sight of him.
