This aimed-at-young-people 2017 Dutch production of King Lear looks interesting anyway, but the reviews as run through Google Translate really make me sorry I missed it:

I don’t know if “confuses” is a Google Translate error for “compares,” but I really like the idea that Gloucester, along with constantly needling Edmund for being illegitimate, also keeps slipping up and forgetting which of his sons is which.

The scariest thing is that I recognize which lines got put through the double-translation wringer there.

Urgh, spent the last forty or so minutes at work being reminded that I still don’t always grasp social interaction when it departs from the usual script:

My boss, in the presence of several co-workers, told me that going forward I need to have the sales staff send me pictures from the trade shows they attend, so I can post them on the website. He and his assistant then got into what struck me as a somewhat circular argument about whose job it will be to write the captions for the pictures.

Eventually I said I’d get to work on an email to the sales staff asking for the pictures, and that I can look at their trade show memos and pull quotes for the captions from their. They seemed ok with this idea, so I sent the email to the sales staff, also CCi’ing everybody who been there for the discussion. A few minutes later my boss sent me an email saying “don’t you know you’re supposed to run this past the group email committee!”

Figuring this had to be a joke, I asked my coworker who pretended for thirty seconds or so that it wasn’t, before admitting that it was.

They don’t usually do this kind of thing to me, which was what made it so distressingly believable; and it’s not as though I’m in sole of reading facial expressions, it’s just that I’m very easy to lie to if there’s no obvious motive for a lie. As it was I did guess correctly that it was a joke, she just confused me by stretching it out. The weird thing was that a few minutes earlier she’d been unnecessarily apologetic about the circular argument because she thought she’d come off as not trusting me to write the captions.

I really hate those so-called 'jokes'. I find them an amalgam of petty sadism, intolerant, an insular outlook and the sort of infantile glee that pathological liars have in lying. Not really a severe example of any of them but a sort of Satanic Overture of themes to no doubt to be explored in depth later.
