I try not to cede things -- it's more that I thought "ok, if these books are my introduction to someone who knows 8absolutely* nothing else about me..."
I never blame anyone for parentheses, and I can well understand the WTF -- it's always worse when it's someone who otherwise makes sense, or at least is interesting.
ETA -- I don't even know if Chesterton is actually a major Republican darling or if it's just the William F. Buckley types who like him.
