In Soviet Russia, Book Launches You!
Jun. 21st, 2012 10:59 pmI don't know exactly how it is that in this decade of my life I seem to have so many friends and acquaintances who are writers; but the advantage on't is, I get invited to a lot of readings and launch parties. Tonight was Dave Nickle's for Rasputin's Bastards. I haven't read it yet, but I have read his first novel, Eutopia, and I need to write about it sometime. The event was at Rasputin's Vodka Lounge, a joint that lives up to its name: I am presently as drunk as I ever get, which is to say I've had two stronger-than-they-tasted drinks and not a lot of food, and I'm a bit unsteady on my legs and chattier than usual. Hoping a glass of water before I sleep will be enough to make me functional at work tomorrow (also, they served some really good dill pickles with the hors-d'oevres, which may help.) Did a lot of chatting with handful_ofdust, who was in her element (absinthe). The washrooms had a nice line in "you're drunk, get a cab" adverts.)I won a copy of Dave's short-story collection from a couple of years back, Monstrous Affections. I was told by people who seemed to know what they were talking about that I should submit 'The Emmet' to Ellen Datlow, which is.... a very high compliment.
