The crew at Making Light discuss the winners of an Ancient Near-Eastern Languages Valentine's Day Contest. A close reading of the "Song of the Four Locusts" is worth your while.

We visited some friends we don't see that often any more now that they live in the north end of the city, and met their two-month-old second child.

green_trilobite gave kid#1 (five years old) a dinosaur abcedary (illustrations by William Stout); and I gave the baby a sweater which was not as oversized as I'd feared it might be.

I'm glad I picked the orange yarn - I figured I'd first encounter her in September, but it's also a good colour on her. She has a thin fuzz of dark hair and different expressions keep flickering across her face. I found myself thinking of her as Tiny Frida Kahlo. She is squirmy but doesn't cry much, and I look forward to meeting her again. Her mother said I was very good at holding babies; I replied that it was all the practice on cats.
