February Lady Turban
Sep. 2nd, 2008 05:30 pmEdited April 7 2009, to correct flaws in the pattern:
Gage for end triangles (I'm bad with gage, so take with a grain of salt):
4 stitches and 6 rows = 1 inch in Stockinette.
Needle size
US 8 / 5.0 mm dpns
US 7 / 4.5 mm straights
US 10 / 6.0 mm circular needle
Starting Triangle:
Begin on 4.5 mm straights:
CO 3 st
Row 1: K1 M1 Kf&b M1 K1
Row 2: P to end
Row 3: K1 M1, K to last st, M1, K1
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 18 st. End on a purl row.
Body (Elizabeth Zimmerman's Gull Lace):
Switch to the size 6.0 mm circular needle, but continue to knit flat.
Row 1: K2, (K1, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SlK, K1) twice, K2.
Rows 2 and 4: K2, P to last 2, K2.
Row 3: K2, (K2tog, yo, K3, yo, SlK) twice, K2.
Repeat until entire piece is 2 inches short of your head's circumference. End on a purl row.
End Triangle:
Return to 4.5 mm straight needles.
Row 1: K1, SlK, K to last 3 st, K2tog, K.
Row 2: P to end.
Repeat these rows till you have 3 st on needle. Cast off and sew to the point of the starting triangle.
Crown:
Using the circular needle, pick up and knit 72 st around the top of the hat. Purl 1 round, K 1 round, until you have 1" of garter stitch, ending on a purl round.
Decreases: (switch to 5.0 mm dpns as necessary)
Round 1: (K2tog, K5, SlK), repeat to end of round (56 st).
Round 2 and all even-numbered rows: Purl to end.
Round 3: (K2tog, K3, SlK) to end (40 st).
Round 5: (K2tog, K1, SlK) to end (24 st).
Round 7: (K1, Sl1, K2tog, psso, K1) to end (8 st). Draw yarn through 8 remaining stitches and tie off.
Cover join with rosette, a fancy button or brooch, or the following knot:
Using dpns, pick up 5 st on one side of join, and knit flat for one inch, then as 5-stitch I-cord for one inch. Decrease to 3-stitch I-cord for 1/2 an inch, then tie off. Leave a tail of 3 or 4 inches. Repeat on other side. Tie the two tabs on a knot over the join, then sew down the ends as seen in the picture, using the yarn tails.
