Aug. 4th, 2008 11:26 amBeen watching the old Mummy movies all weekend. We saw Dragon Emperor on Friday night (short verdict - not as good as the first one, but way better than The Mummy Returns) and were discussing the peculiar passage of time in the series - by the third film it's supposed to be the late 1940s, but Brendan Fraser does not look remotely old enough to have a grown son. I argued for it being an homage to pulp-character aging, but I now see the original series has peculiar chronology as well, though in the opposite direction.
The Karloff Mummy more or less stands alone. The sequel is set in the 1940s, but the sequel to that takes place "thirty years later" and the few characters who return from the previous film are made up to look way older - however, the setting is still the 1940s (characters mention the Russian Front, and the hero gets drafted towards the end of the picture). The next film has an entirely new bunch of characters except the Mummy, and it's still the '40s - the film after that is "25 years later." By now we should be seeing a Jetsons setting, or at least the 1990s, but it looks like the late 40s or very early 50s.
