In which I have my doubts
May. 11th, 2007 12:39 pmAlthough BB descibes this period Popular Mechanics ad as being for breast enlargement, I'm not so sure. For one thing, it comes from 1924, when flat chests were in (although the readership for Popular Mechanics was likely mostly male, and as I understand it, anytime fashion dictates that women should be thin and boyish-looking the avarage heterosexual male goes into despair); I also notice that the ad copy pitches its Psycho-Expander to men as well as women. My theory - if the accompanying book, “FRESH AIR BEAUTY,” was illustrated with models like the one in the ad demonstrating the exercises, it might explain what men were actually buying it for: "No, really, it's a health instructional book."
