Quick, before the lawyers find it!
Jan. 10th, 2007 12:53 pmYou tube has a lot of the really old Silly Symphonies up. They're not in fantastic shape but for most of these this is the first time I'd seen them anywhere - except for The Skeleton Dance I only really knew these from still images in books about the history of animation. Biggest revelation - how good the illusion of three-dimensional space and movement could be, even back then (frex, the spider going down the winding passages in Egyptian Melodies). The best two are Skeleton Dance and The Cookie Carnival, the latter of which is very Frank L Baum in its mix of charming fantasy and just-plain-weirdness (living cookie people I can deal with - doughnuts who take turns dunking their bottoms in a cup of hot coffee is just wrong).
