Blogging from my Parents' House
Aug. 14th, 2006 04:37 pmTomorrow morning we head back to Toronto. Air travel this weekend wasn't as difficult as we'd heard - we knew what to excise from our luggage ahead of time (toothpaste and sunscreen - we also decided to leave behind the powdered drink mix in case somebody was reasoning by association instead of logically), and carry-on was all I'd packed. I have to learn that the recommended 2-hours or more leave time they tell you to give yourself at airports is for people with baggage to check; we always sail through smoothly to the departure gate and then have three or more hours to kill until boarding.
Anyway, green_trilobite was taken to the Joggins fossil cliffs yesterday, along with myself and our friend Angus; he says the little museum there was actually pretty good, I hung around in front with my father and the young man running the gift counter, who identified me as a visitor from Ontario by my shoes - this conclusion was true, but the clue was false - I'd borrowed the shoes from my mom, who'd bought them in Charlottetown. Anyway the beach itself was fantastically windy, but we collectively found a bit of horsetail, a bit of a fern, and some leaf fragments, all from the Carboniferous.
Today we went to Parlee Beach, stopping to photograph the World's Biggest Lobster (photos to come). green_trilobite and I tried Walking Along the Beach - this being one of the rare times he'd ever tried that romantic cliche, he wasn't sure about walking in sand, but learned that the secret is to stay just at the edge of the surf, where the wet sand gives better footing, and the waves wash over your toes. We saw a hermit crab. I also found a tiny starfish later.
