Hallowe'en and Blasphe-Me
Oct. 28th, 2004 06:06 pmHallowe’en comes this weekend, and I’m helping the BPB dress up as “God” from Monty Python’s The Holy Grail, which is pretty much the most blasphemous thing I’ve done since, well, since a couple of Hallowe’ens ago, when I helped my friend Angus dress up as Shiva. Yeah, I guess I do this a lot.
I salve my conscience with the thought that he’s not really dressing as God, but as “God,” a fictional character from a comedy film, and, if that’s too much sophistry, that the real God is probably far less annoyed by people dressing up in a clearly playful context than by people actually claiming to speak on His/Her behalf, who then get people to go kill one another.
Anyway, if God actually is that touchy, I’m pretty much going to Hell anyway for shopping on a Sunday/Saturday, living in a monogamous relationship for five years without actually being married to the guy, having friends who are homosexuals - hey, for celebrating Hallowe’en at all, acording to the Fundamentalists, since it used to be a pagan holiday. If you’re going to be like that you should probably cancel Christmas too, ‘cos, you know, it falls around the time of the winter solstice. Consistency, people, consistency!
Seriously, though, I don’t think Hallowe’en is about celebrating evil. I’d say it’s about acknowledging that it exists, and then defying it; how monsters may be harmless, under the surface; how sooner or later, we’re all gonna die; how maybe our skulls are grinning at a joke we just haven’t gotten yet; and how once you go through the dark scary places, there’s light, and candy.
Actually, for most of us, it’s about the candy. I’m just a pretentious undercover Goth. Still, when you’re out and about this weekend, spare a kind thought for the dead, and for the dying year; and if you’re in Toronto, keep an eye out for me - I’ll be the one-eyed nurse giving everyone shots in the arm, and I’ll be hanging with “God,” aka the big manic-depressive guy trailing clouds of glory.
