I'm assuming most people reading this saw the movie thirty five minutes ago Friday night, but spoiler alert anyway:

Nitpicks first:

Even with the decision to leave out Tales of the Black Freighter, I could have used more scenes of the Newsvendor and the Kid's Greek Chorus/non-buddy act - it would have lent weight to the Newsvendor's instinctive attempt to shield the Kid from the blast at the end. Maybe they'll get more screen time on the DVD.

I would have liked more scenes of the poignant camaraderie among the scientists at Gila Flats, but on second thought they managed to encapsulate it through Wally's facial expressions. However, having Osterman go back for his own watch only saved a few minutes of explanation and lost several links of causality/fatalism.

In the comic, Veidt says: "I did it, thirty-five minutes ago." Clear and chilling. In the movie, he says "I put my plan into effect, thirty-five minutes ago," which might conceivably just mean he set the timer. Not as spooky.

Highlights:

The "forty-five years of masked-hero history montage." I actually had tears in my eyes, it was so beautifully done. Which leads into:

The soundtrack: good use of period music, and not one but two Leonard Cohen numbers, including Mr. Cohen's own rendition of "Hallelujah," with its happy/sad vibe, and not one of the doleful covers that have replaced REM's "Everybody Hurts" as the Sad Montage Song.

The sex scenes: Both the bad (Comedian/Silk Spectre I) and the good (Silk Spectre II/Nite Owl II) sex was way more realistic than one usually sees in a movie.

Rorschach: I had predicted the movie would stand or fall on this, and wow, but it stood. Generally, all performances were extremely faithful to the book. However, I found I actually liked their Veidt slightly better than the rather bland one in the book, though I suppose one could argue his edgy, quirky manner made him a more obvious suspect (assuming there was anyone in the theatre who hadn't already read the book years ago.)

One last completely self-indulgent nitpick - Rorschach didn't take any sugar packets! Come on, he's the wacky neighbour in a dark and disturbed universe, he's gotta take Dan's sugar packets!
