Seeing People

Went to theengineer's "I own a house now" party last night; we've being staying home a lot of late, trying to be fiscally-responsible, so it was nice to get out and see people. I'm afraid I was buttonholing a lot of guests with the topics that have been on my mind, such as "seahorses are cool;" "many of the health issues associated with inbred rural populations were probably iodine deficiencies;" "The Littles did the only 1980s "Drugs are Bad" story that wasn't inane;" "Ravelry could be used as a plot device in a detective show;" and "the depiction in movies of the stuffy British men's club where no one is supposed to talk out loud actually seems to be derived from the Diogenes Club, even though it's clear from The Greek Interpreter that Mycroft Holmes' regular club was extremely atypical, a refuge for the 'unclubable:'"

There are many men in London, you know, who, some from shyness, some from misanthropy, have no wish for the company of their fellows. Yet they are not averse to comfortable chairs and the latest periodicals.

Today I'm trying to decide whether to buy a few more sewing patterns, as McCall's is having an end-of-season sale. I'd hold off for a few months on buying fabric to make them up.

(ETA - gave in to temptation - will get patterns for a dress, a tunic and a hat for 11$ including the shipping.)

The cheese omelets I made for lunch turned out very well; the trick seems to be to use a proper whisk instead of a fork, and to add nothing but salt while beating the eggs.

Seahorses are cool. Also, sea dragons!

Boing Boing had a link to a video of one of these guys eating a big, super-poisonous jellyfish a while back. They especially like jellies because, not only are they nutritious, they're a source of deadly poisons which these nudibranchs then concentrate and use to become the most poisonous kids on the block.

Well, if you substitute "interNet connection" for "latest periodicals" you can see that he's just describing a Victorian InterNet Cafe.

I don't know why you're afraid that you were buttonholing people about all the cool things that you've been investigating. I sensed no fear in anyone else: and I can smell their fear you know. It is indeed refreshing to converse with a young lady who looks outward into the wonders of the universe and who isn't being stereotypically obsessed with themselves or their friends.
